Hillsborough to Turn Red, White, and Blue for Independence Day

Plans include a patriotic house decorating contest and fire hydrant painting

HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. —  Hillsborough Township’s 250th Anniversary Planning Team is currently preparing for the town’s Semiquincentennial celebration, marking a milestone in both local and national history.

“We’re going to turn the town red, white, and blue to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary,” said Deputy Mayor and committee liaison Shawn Lipani at the March 24 Township Committee meeting. “Plans include a patriotic house decorating contest and an initiative to paint fire hydrants red, white, and blue, mirroring the nationwide celebrations seen during the Bicentennial in 1976.”

Additional projects currently in development include an initiative to plant a “Semiquincentennial Forest” of 250 trees and a series of interactive historic maps and digital markers to be placed at notable locations throughout the community. During New Jersey Local Government Week, which takes place from April 12 through 18, the Township will also share historical facts regarding Hillsborough’s local governance.

“The 250th Anniversary Committee has been making plans since last June,” said Mayor Catherine Payne. “The team is committed to a fun, interactive celebration that commemorates Hillsborough’s vital role in our nation’s history.”

Businesses interested in sponsoring Semiquincentennial initiatives should contact the Economic & Business Development Office at (908) 369 - 3533. More detailed information regarding specific events and activities will be released closer to their respective launch dates.
