Recommended Reading from SCLS: New Jersey in the American Revolution

New Jersey in the American Revolution, edited by Barbara J. Mitnick, 2005
When New Jersey’s 225th Anniversary of the Revolution Celebration Commission under Governor Christine Todd Whitman was formed, the commission was concerned about the lack of knowledge about New Jersey’s participation in the American Revolution and state history in general. The commission wanted to address the need for more textbooks and sources of information. This book, which is an anthology of essays by twelve experts on New Jersey history, came out of their mission.
Recognizing that New Jersey was the “Crossroads of the Revolution,” there are chapters devoted to the important military campaigns of the American Revolution as well as the significant contributions of blacks, Native Americans, and women on both the battlefield and homefront and New Jersey’s first constitution in 1776. To give a complete picture of life in New Jersey and the war’s impact on life, there are also essays on the socio-economic conditions, fine and decorative arts, literature, and architecture.
