Hillsborough Township and Praiano, Italy, Officially Establish Historic "Friendship Cities" Partnership

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ –Hillsborough Township has officially entered into a historic international partnership with the picturesque town of Praiano, Italy, establishing a formal "Friendship Cities" relationship. The agreement, which was announced during a presentation at the June 23rd Township Committee meeting, marks the beginning of a cultural, educational, and civic alliance between the two municipalities.

The initiative initially took shape in May at Italy's Amalfi Coast where former Hillsborough Mayor and current Township Administrator Anthony Ferrera was vacationing, and introduced to Praiano Mayor Anna Maria Caso by La Maurella Hotel manager Michele Di Martino. A casual conversation about shared municipal priorities evolved into an official effort to bridge the geographical distance between the two communities.

Following a successful resolution by Praiano’s Municipal Executive on Monday, June 22, and subsequent confirmation by the Hillsborough Township Committee, the framework for this international bond is now complete. The partnership will focus heavily on opportunities for youth through bilateral educational and training projects, the exchange of municipal best practices, and the promotion of tourism.

"It is with deep emotion and great pride that, on behalf of the Administration and the community of Praiano, I wish to thank the town of Hillsborough, in the person of Anthony Ferrera, following the resolution of the Municipal Executive with which we have officially initiated our Friendship Pact," said Praiano Mayor Anna Maria Caso. "The signing of this agreement represents not only a formal act, but the beginning of a shared journey. Friendship pacts not only unite institutions, but the hearts and stories of people. This is the true value of the global community we want to build."

During their initial meeting in Italy, Mayor Caso and Administrator Ferrera found they shared similar views on various civic challenges, including financial stability, tourism management, and a mutual passion for supporting the aging population and individuals with special needs.

"We are very excited for our two towns as we continue moving forward with this meaningful friendship agreement," said Administrator Ferrera. "We are genuinely excited about the relationship being built between our communities and the opportunities it will create going forward, particularly in sharing our administrative practices and creating new paths for our youth."

The Friendship City designation stands as a symbolic and practical testament to the enduring bonds between Italy and Hillsborough, promising shared growth and cooperation for generations to come.

"Hillsborough is proud to open this new chapter of international friendship with Praiano," said Hillsborough Mayor Catherine Payne. "Our township shares a deep appreciation for culture, community, and heritage, and we look forward to the wonderful opportunities this partnership will bring to our residents and future generations"
